This week, Year 5/6 investigated which substances dissolve in water! We tested coffee granules, sugar, flour, sunflower oil and butter to find out what would happen when they were mixed with water.
We made sure our experiment was a fair test by keeping the amount of water, the amount of each substance and the stirring time the same. This meant we could compare our results fairly and make our investigation more reliable.
We predicted which substances would dissolve and then carefully observed what happened. We discovered that sugar and coffee granules dissolve in water, while flour makes the water cloudy. Sunflower oil floats on the surface, and butter does not dissolve easily.
We learned that some substances dissolve to form a solution, while others remain separate or form a mixture.
We really enjoyed being scientists and investigating how different materials behave in water.
